Mac Studio internal microphone input disappeared permanently after connecting USB-C EarPods

After connecting my USB-C EarPods to the front ports of my Mac Studio, the internal microphone disappeared as input option from the system permanently (visible neither in the menu bar audio selection nor the settings app) even after disconnecting the EarPods.

Attempts to solve the problem by

  • Disconnecting the EarPods and all other cable connections
  • restarting the MacStudio
  • killing Core Audio with "sudo killall coreaudiod"

did not fix it.

I no longer have access to the internal microphone which also makes it impossible to use an external microphone connected to the read audio jack port.

Mac Studio, macOS 14.5

Sorry to be nit picky on your wording

But neither the 2022 nor the 2023 models appears to have a Builtin Internal Microphone

That is left to External Microphones

So I am not sure one will find an Internal Microphone listed in System Information >> Hardware >> Audio

Using an external mic with Y splitter cable or EarPods worked fine for me until the input source disappeared.

Perhaps it is the audio mini-jack. I would imagine you would need a TRRS plug on your microphone to make it work. There is a YouTube video using a Y-cable with iPhone connect to one end and TRS microphone plug on the other side. It has to be recognized as a microphone to show up in the Sound settings. The inputs and outputs are dynamic. Unless it detects there is a microphone on that jack, it won't show External Microphone in the settings.

Thanks for pointing out. I was unsure about the device name as it no longer appears in the list. What I am referring to is actually the audio input source representing the headphone jack at the back of the Mac Studio.

I'll update the description.

Connecting a device to the headphone jack still shows the output source but no longer the input source.

I don't think the headphone mini-jack supports audio in.

It's listed as a Headphone jack, not audio in/out. Everything I can find on Apple articles and other forums indicate is has no input capability.
