Attach External Camera to Mac

My son wants to try making some stop-motion animations on the Mac. (up to now, he's been using a phone app.)

Are there DSLR cameras that can be attached to a Macbook that don't cost a thousand dollars or more? And how does that connection take place? (Special cable? HDMI? USB?)

Pretty much any DSLR camera can be attached to the Mac.

Stop motion is just a bunch of still images stitched together into a continuous video.

You can take the pictures, and then combine them in a video, there's no real difference between normal pics and stop motion pics when transferring to the Mac.

Yes, it will likely be over USB, (HDMI on Macs is generally output only) to download the pictures onto the Mac and then build the video on it.

I think you are over-complicating a process that is pretty simple. The complex part is to take the pictures for the motion, not transferring them to the computer to make the video.
