I reinstalled OS X Mountains Lion on my MacBook Pro, restarted itself and brought up the utility screen, what do I do next?

Sounds like you may have a bad hard drive or possibly a bad hard drive SATA Cable.....the latter is especially common with the MBPro 13" (mid-2012) model.


Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't detect most hardware issues, but it never hurts to try.


You can try installing macOS onto an external USB3 drive to see if the external drive will boot properly. If the diagnostics don't show any problems, then I can provide instructions for creating & using a bootable Linux USB stick so you can check the health of the internal drive....it may possibly even reveal a bad internal SATA Cable, just let me know.
