Yes. You can use any larger power adapter including the 140 watt one. The MacBook Air won't draw more power than it is designed to.

It definitely isn't due to compatibility. The 90 watt adapter is no longer sold but see the Compatibility section of 96W USB-C Power Adapter - Apple
and 140W USB-C Power Adapter - Apple
There may be problem with the power adapter itself. If someone else here doesn't have another suggestion you may want to Contact - Official Apple Support

So when I connected the 96W power adapter for the first time ...
Every 90 seconds or so my Mac signals one audible 'dong.' When I re-connected the 30W adapter the audible dong did not repeat.
