My iPhone/iPad pro won’t use my bluetooth headset’s microphone.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max, and also my iPad Pro 12.9 inch 4th generation, won’t use the microphone on my bluetooth headset that has a microphone. They pair with it, and I can hear the audio on my headset from the device, but when using an app like TikTok, Camera, and even the phone itself, the device defaults to the phone’s internal mic.

I have the same thing on both devices if I try using my AirPods. I hear music fine, but the devices default to the device microphone instead of the headset/airpod microphone.

Both devices are updated to the latest IOS which is 17.5.1 as of now.

The above may sound like I’m trying to use my iPhone and iPad at the same time, I am not. I just included both, because I’m having the same issue on iPhone as I am on iPad Pro.

I’ve searched all over and can’t find any setting that will tell my devices to use the headset mic, instead of the internal iPhone/iPad mic.

Anyone have a solution?

Ok, thanks. Let's give the following a try then. You can start with your iPhone and the headset. The procedure would be nearly identical using the iPad or AirPods.

  • Forget and Re-Pair this headset
    • Go to Settings > Bluetooth
    • Find your headset, tap the "i" icon next to it, and select Forget This Device.
    • Re-pair the headset by putting them into pairing mode and connecting again through Bluetooth settings.

  • Ensure Proper Device Selection
    • When connected, tap the audio icon (usually a speaker or Bluetooth symbol) in the app you’re using.
    • Ensure your Bluetooth headset is selected for both input and output.

  • Check App Permissions and Settings
    • Some apps may have their own audio input settings. Check within each app’s settings to see if you can manually select the Bluetooth microphone.

  • Microphone Access
    • Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone
    • Ensure the apps in question (Camera, TikTok, etc.) have microphone access enabled.

If none of the above helps, we need to go on to general iOS troubleshooting.

  • Restart your iPhone

  • Reset Network Settings:
    • Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    • This will reset your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, so you’ll need to reconnect to your networks and devices afterward.

  • Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Ensure your headset has the latest firmware updates.
