powered on laptop and blank screen appears. then folder icon with question mark.

Black screen with a blinking folder on my erased MacBook Pro I am taking my husbands old computer and I went to erase the whole device and now i am seeing a black screen with a blinking folder with a question mark in the middle. It says support.apple.com/mac/startup on the bottom i went on that site but i have not been able to get past this screen. [Re-Titled by Moderator]

Most likely the drive has failed. If you have the non-Retina model, then there is a chance the internal hard drive SATA Cable is bad (especially the 13" mid-2012 non-Retina model where this cable had an extremely high rate of failure).

I hope you have a good backup since trying to recover data from a failing hard drive is tricky and likely to make the drive failure even worse.
