I am taking my husbands old computer and I went to erase the whole device and now i am seeing a black screen with a blinking folder with a question mark in the middle. It says support.apple.com/mac/startup on the bottom i went on that site but i have not been able to get past this screen.

they left the punchline off that question mark section of the article:
If you have recently ERASED your Mac, you must now Re-Install a version of MacOS to make progress.
DO THIS: Use Recovery mode to 're-install macOS'.
Once you have ANY version of MacOS installed and set up, it can be upgraded to a different version you might like better.
