My Magic Keyboard doesn’t work when I try composing a document in Pages.

Can you clarify what you mean by "doesn't work?"
My Magic Keyboard for M4 iPad Pro works fine with Pages v14.1 on iPadOS 17.5.1. The traditional external Apple Magic Keyboard (including extended) is shown by Apple to be compatible with 1st generation iPad Pro through M4 models.
Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the Magic Keyboard and restarting your device?
