In pages, when I select new blank template keyboard did not appear to type anything

Pages provides two different blank templates: 1) Blank is for word-processing mode, and 2) Blank Layout is for page layout mode. The first template allows you to type normally in Pages and the second requires one to insert text boxes within which to type.
Quit Pages and create a new document with the Blank template.
