Apple Watch Series 4 was introduced in 2018 and discontinued in 2019. Lithium ion batteries of that generation have a realistic lifespan of about 5 years. If the original buyer purchased the watch near introduction in 2018, the battery has pretty much reached EOL (End of Life) and needs to be replaced in order to maintain performance and owner expectations.

On a personal note I purchased my wife a gold Series 4 in fall 2018 and it has also reached EOL. I gave her my old series 5, but it is starting to exhibit a battery with reduced overall capacity. I’ll be taking here watch to an Apple Store to have the battery replaced.
