Switch off of 3G network Optus Australia

I have an iPhone XS bought in 2018/9 in the US, which I regularly use in Australia.

my Australian carrier, Optus, is shutting down its 3G network and says my phone will no longer work and I must upgrade it.

”you're using an iPhone XS and we regret to inform you that the specific version of the phone you're using does not support the LTE Band 28. This means that you'll no longer connect to the Optus network once the 3G network will be shutdown”

It’s not an old phone and works just fine here in the states. Must I really replace my phone or are there options to keep it going. The Optus FAQs say

“We recommend you upgrade to a device that supports:

  • The 4G Network 700 MHz (LTE Band 28 or also known as the B28 spectrum)
  • 4G Voice over LTE (VoLTE), which is the technology that enables voice calls to be made over a 4G network, including emergency calling.
  • You may need to enable VoLTE in the device settings
  • Some recent 4G devices may also be impacted including models that were purchased overseas or imported and aren’t configured for Australian networks or do not support 4G VoLTE.”

Given the final point, I was hoping that my phone has settings for the US that can be changed for Australia?  All advice much appreciated.

The Technical Specifications for the iPhone XS show that models A1920 (XS) and A1921 (XS Max) support various FDD-LTE and TD-LTE bands. Band 28 does not appear to be one of them.

If your current carrier requires support for band 28, specifically, then your options would appear to be to switch to another carrier who still supports your phone, or to switch to a different phone.

This third-party site says that Optus uses 4G/LTE bands 1, 3, 7, 28, and 40. It also says that "For BEST results you should try and buy a device that has either all Australian frequencies for each mobile technology (3G and LTE) or at least all frequencies for the carrier/s you intend on using the device with."

The iPhone XS Technical Specifications list bands 1, 3, and 7 – but not bands 28 and 40. It seems to me that it is very possible that there are large areas in Australia in which Optus' cellular coverage relies on bands 28 and 40 – and therefore, a phone that cannot use those bands might have "no service" once Optus shuts off 3G service.

Especially if Optus themselves are saying that you need a phone that works with band 28. That's kind of a big hint.

Re: “… It is an old phone …”

There’s no argument to be made as it’s completely subjective and “in the eye of the beholder”

… but I wouldn’t characterize any device which can run iOS 17 - AND is due to also run iOS 18 - “old.”

“Middle-aged” maybe. 😉

But if the carrier doesn’t support it … they DO hold the ultimate “veto” authority.
