pressing camera button does not work, brings up useless icon

Pressing the camera icon next to the text field in whatsapp to initiate a video note does not work; it merely brings up a square image of a camera icon and the word "Camera" (see screenshot). I have gone through all the recommended steps. Updated iOS and app. All permissions granted. Deleted and reinstalled several times; restarted the phone several times. iPhone 12 Pro. It seems like something is specifically wrong with my phone. Whatsapp, by the way, refuses to help with this issue.
