How is it possible that I can't connect to a new HomePod with my brand new Macbook?

It's really too bad, I was about ready to go all in on the Apple Ecosystem but I obviously can't afford to upgrade everything at once. I have an older iPAD mini 3 and a new MacBook Air. Was planning on switching back to the iPhone when I am due for an upgrade and convert all of my families Windows and Google devices over to Apple, as well as all of my "Smart Home" devices, but if I can't use my new Apple product to connect to my new Apple product then this is just plain unethical. So How do I fix this? Take back my gear and go all in on Linux? Does Apple have an answer that doesn't involve me paying thousands more for new equipment?

By “connect” if you mean setting it up, you can’t set a HomePod up with a Mac.. To set up HomePod (2nd generation), you need an iPhone with iOS 16.3 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 16.3 or later. You iPad mini is on iOS 12.

Once you have a new iPhone you can use the HomePod for Audio output with your Mac
