Why do MP3 files imported into iTunes on my PC show as MPEG?

when i import a cd into itunes on my pc, the files that were mp3 show as mpeg. (they all play fine, though). why is this happening? And i do have import as mp3 turned on.

mpeg is the type of file, shown in iTunes as kind, while mp3 is the file extension. In basic terms, mp3 tells the computer how to use the file, while the kind (or file type) tells you what sort of file it is. Note that iTunes states mpeg audio file which tells you that it's an audio file, not a text file or picture:




Every file needs to have a file extension, which tells the computer which programme to use in order to show, use or play it to you. It's normal, you do not need to concern yourself with this.
