Apple TV black screen during movies - trying to switch hdr

My Apple TV regularly shows a black screen while I’m watching hdr or Dolby vision content while set to “match dynamic range”, both when it’s regularly sdr or hdr. I stopped it by setting it to always be Dolby vision, but I don’t know how to fix it while keeping it at match dynamic range. It seems like it is trying to switch dynamic range during the movie, but I don’t know why it would be doing that. Thank you in advance

This is expected behavior for TVs that do not support Quick Media Switching. It takes some time for TVs to adjust to a signal change over HDMI. How much time, that differs by brand and model.

For much VOD content, it doesn’t matter much; only at the beginning and end. But for content with ad interruptions, it may be much more inconvenient.

For modern higher end TVs with support for QMS, this would get adjusted within the time for one frame, so no one notices.
