Suddenly when I open the mail icon, I see my folders on the left. I see my messages in the middle and now on the right there is a new sidebar with a synopsis of whatever message is highlighted. How do I get rid of the right side bar?

Drag the separator between the email list and the selected email preview all the way to the right. It will make the preview pane disappear.
In Mail, go to the View menu and choose the Columns view. This is perhaps what you are looking for.
Yes, it does go away but the info at the top is still gone. I can’t forward mail nor respond. Thanks for answering. I don’t know how this happened.
I mean I can forward and respond when I tap onto the email of course. But I’m used to information that used to be at the top of the emails. It’s all gone.
