TextToSpeech crashing Safari?
I'm using a 2020 27" iMac (Intel Core i7) running Sonoma 14.5. The issue started about 6 days ago, which doesn't correlate with any macOS updates or new app installs.
---
Every browser crashes with certain websites (e.g. LinkedIn, ChatGPT, AlternativeTo.net). The crash reports suggest the TextToSpeech framework is involved.
I've tried, with no success:
- Using a Private Browsing tab
- Using a different Safari profile
- Turning off all Safari extensions
- Clearing caches, cookies, and history from Safari
- Running my Mac in Safe Mode
- Removing all Login Items and restarting
- Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
- Running Onyx maintenance scripts
- Running CleanMyMac X maintenance scripts
- Deleting all the plist files in my User Library that include Voice or Speech in the file name
The issue does not affect other users on the same Mac
---
The Console also shows VoiceOver Utility, MauiAUSP, MacinTalkAUSP, and axassetsd have crashed multiple times.
If I go to System Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content, I don't see the preference pane. A pop-up says: Extension Process Accessibility (2518) exited, or Extension Process Accessibility (3452) exited.
I put the VoiceOver Utility crash report into an AI assistant and got this feedback:
- The crash was likely caused by an unrecognized selector being sent to an instance of NSNull, resulting in an NSInvalidArgumentException.
- The crash occurred during the process of loading voices for the speech synthesis framework, specifically in the -[BabelFish allVoices] method.

Does anyone have any thoughts for what could help resolve this?
