Messages from Mac to Android failing

Yesterday, I could send messages from my MacBookPro to Android users via my iPhone 13. Today, it won't work. Messages FROM Android users are delivered to my Mac BUT attempts to reply fail.

I've tried restarting both the iPhone and the Mac. I've unchecked and rechecked the text message forwarding setting on the iPhone. None of the recommended fixes are working. MacOS Sonoma 14.5; iOS 17.5.1 (both the latest versions).

What's suddenly gone wrong and how to I fix it?

Today, still MacOS Sonoma 14.5; iOS 17.5.1, it works. The fact that I have a iPad Mini 4 (obsolete, but the Kindle app still works and that's about all I use it for) seems to have something to do with this issue. I appear to have "fixed" the problem without realizing it when I restarted the iPad Mini (something I almost never do).

I wonder if the proximity of that iPad has anything to do with another recurrent problem--the sudden failure of the MacOS permitting unlocking with my Apple Watch????
