I suddenly cannot send messages from my macbook air to android users. The instructions to go to messages and then click on forwarding messages is a problem because there is no such thing as forwarding messages on my iphone.

Where are you looking? and what phone (model and iOS version)?
The option should be in Settings -> Apps -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding:
