AirPlay is Apple’s protocol for device-to-device streaming, and a bit different. Different enough to be incompatible. Just like with Chromecast (Google Cast), both the sending device and the receiving device must support these protocols. While select third party apps on Apple devices may have added support for Chromecast, Apple’s own apps do not. These protocols are independent of each other, even if they do somewhat similar things. Receiving devices can support none, one, or both.

AirPlay is not exclusively for Apple devices (anymore). There are many smart TV that have licensed AirPlay-enabling technology now, and there are third party streaming devices that are AirPlay-enabled now (Roku). The manufacturer must choose to support it, so it is about select brands and relatively modern models.

Else consider if having the Apple TV app on a smart TV or third party streaming device may support what you intend to do. It would often be more convenient on-device than streaming device-to-device. Like above, the manufacturer must choose to support it, so it is about select brands/platforms and relatively modern devices.

Examples of third party external streaming devices that support the Apple TV app, for any TV with HDMI, are: Roku, Fire TV, PlayStation (4, 5), Xbox (One, One S, X, S), ‘Chromecast with Google TV’-dongle, or Nvidia Shield TV box. Also, select cable boxes/satellite TV boxes may support the Apple TV+ app.

You may be able to connect your iPhone to the TV by HDMI, using an adapter.

You may be able to set your TV as second screen for a computer.

You may be able to use Chromecast from the Chrome browser on your computer.

But the favorite may be an Apple TV box, for the best experience. Versatile and fast. Especially in combination with other Apple devices, like iPhone.
