It depends on what type of input the monitor requires.

Your Mac can support one external monitor, with a resolution up to 6K @ 60 Hz (over Thunderbolt) or 4K @ 60 Hz (over USB-C (DisplayPort)). Many monitors have DisplayPort, HDMI, and USB-C (DisplayPort) inputs. With them, you'd use one of the following:

  • A USB-C to USB-C cable. This can carry video to a monitor, carry charging power from a monitor to a notebook, and connect monitor hub ports at the same time.
  • A USB-C to DisplayPort adapter or adapter cable. This brings out the native DisplayPort signal.
  • A USB-C to HDMI adapter or adapter cable. This converts the native DisplayPort signal to HDMI.

With a 27" Apple 5K Studio Displays, 32" Apple 6K Pro Display XDR, or a few other high-end displays, you'd need a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable. Those have USB-C connectors on the ends, but are built to higher standards than regular USB-C cables, to carry data reliably at Thunderbolt speeds.
