Air tag tracking

Just have a question about the AirTags, I know they require a nearby Apple device to work that’s within Bluetooth range.

If the device to be tracked was for arguments sake in the middle of a field, no where near any devices, and I were to walk round the area with my phone that has a perfect signal, would it pickup the tag and transmit its location to me fairly quickly if I get within range? I understand it’s not a true gps tracker, however there aren’t very many compact enough options available for the situation I want to use it for.
