External enclosure for my retrieved ssd hd taken from my old A1708 MacBook pro

I have removed the ssd hd from my old dead MacBook Pro model A1708.

It is circa 2”x1” with connection teeth along the long side. It is far wider than the enclosures Amazon claims suitable for me to enclose the device and copy my files to my new MacBook Air. I see wider enclosures, but no illustrations of the devices they will contain.

Apple say they don’t produce an enclosure and all their technical dept and Shop techy can offer, is for me to purchase an appropriate enclosure for them to then attempt the file transfer. Does anyone out there know a manufacture of the enclosure I need?

There's not enough information here to know for sure what you have. A1708 covers a number of different models from 2016-2019.

But I'm going to guess that you have a late 2016 non-touchbar MBP. Does your SSD look something like this ->

If so, it's a proprietary NVMe SSD. I searched and could not find any enclosure that would fit this drive.

You might call OWC and see if they have any suggestions.

Aside: You need to get in the practice of making backups.

If you had a current backup now, it wouldn't be that important to get an enclosure that might not exist for your old SSD.

There will be no pulling out of the SSD HD [sic] from the new MacBook Air. The flash chip or chips containing the data are soldered in. Even if they weren't, most of the data bin them is encrypted using keys held by the M2 / M3. Separate the flash chip(s) from the encryption key(s) and the encrypted data might as well be so much hash.

I had ICloud backup of course - but for whatever reason there were gaps and most modern spreadsheets were missing - not all though. My supposed backup external disk was worse, it had been running for hours alongside the MacBook and was selected as my auto back up. Has to be an easy way to ensure latest info is recorded?
