Face ID and Face ID set up not working.

Out of nowhere the face id stopped working. I tried to reset and set back up my face id and it wouldn’t detect my face and kept saying “move phone lower/higher” something like that. It also repeatedly unfocused telling me my face wasn’t in frame even though it was. This is on a IPhone 12 Mini on iOS 17.5.1

Unfortunately, that is usually a hardware failure. What you should check:

I’m going through the same problem and I was told by a man that fixes cellphones that it’s because I can’t update my phone anymore! I have the iPhone X version…which is no longer available for updates, but this doesn’t make sense because I know others who also have the iPhone X and there Face ID still works on their phones. I’ve tried resetting my phone and turned it off and on and still got nothing!
