Can I use the "file:///" url format in Pages to link documents?

Look, I want to do a very simple and important task in Pages. Emphasize "simple". I need to reference stored documents in iCloud, within a Pages report. I don't understand why this is so complicated, since we can link to websites (using URLs). Many apps allow links using the "file:///" url format why not Pages?

Linking to files regardless of their storage location was not designed into Pages. If you want to do that, then use MS Word or another word processing application that supports that feature. As we are fellow users, and the Pages product team does not participate here, the why rests with them.

Although you can use the link tool to apply a file URI to an iCloud (for example) document, and the link will take, clicking the link in a Pages document, or after export to PDF will do absolutely nothing.

You can send a feature request in the feedback form from the Pages application menu and that goes directly to the product team. Don't expect any reply though.

Pages v14.1/macOS Sonoma 14.5

Apple is not competing with any other word-processing application vendor for any functional reason. It took them over 11 years to add non-contiguous text selection to Pages after 2013 and you can imagine there were a huge number of users wanting that feature.

The free LibreOffice Writer can provide links to documents from its Insert menu > Hyperlink… menu item. Files will open in their default opening application. This is because LibreOffice is an MS Office clone. That download site will also let you select a build for Apple Silicon Macs if you have one.

If you must resort to installing Microsoft applications on Sonoma, consider Office 2021 for Mac which has a really low cost of ~$34 via the Stack Social site. You will need a Microsoft account as part of the purchase process. I used it for my installation of this software suite.

Thank you for the response. I am a long time Word user, but I was trying to avoid installing Windows apps on my Mac. I would assume Apple has been hit with this request for some time. Even TextEdit supports document links, although it is not robust enough to use in lieu of Pages. If they do not intend to allow this enhancement in the future I will have no choice but to go back to Word, since this is a deal breaker for me in using Pages. I'm sorry, I just don't understand why this is not something many users would desire. Using links from file to file should be a global app feature, or even included within the OS as an API. It has been my experience for many years, that reaching out to any Apple team concerning requests, is a dead end. I might "guess" that this is not something they can easily implement in iOS (which seems to be the favorite now), so they canned the idea.

Thank you, I stand corrected. I should have said "Microsoft" vs. Windows app. I do know the difference. Actually, in case you are unaware, Microsoft Word lived on Macintosh years before Windows was born (Excel also). I have been an Apple fan boy since I purchased an Apple II+ in 1978. Unfortunately my career jobs forced me to use every version of Windows since its birth in '95. However, currently all my thousands of documents were created with Pages, I prefer to keep it that way, but I am not against going back to Word on a partial basis, which seems to be my only choice at this time.

I'm glad to hear it is a solid app on Mac now. Thank you for your reply.

Like you, I've used Apple computers almost from the beginning but, of course, just as you had no way of knowing that about me, I had no way, based on what you had posted, of knowing that about you.

Other than a brief flirtation with WordPerfect (it was a great program), I've used Word for its superior cross-platform capabilities (we won't talk about Word 5 for the Mac). Sure, it has lots of features I never use. But, when you really need a feature, it's likely to have it. Pages doesn't compete in the same league. And that's fine if it does what you need.
