I connect the PS 5 via the HDMI adapter to the iMac, but nothing happens, the iMac does not see the PS 5. I want to run this through the OBS program. I don't have a TV to use the PS Remote Play to connect my iMac to the ps5 for remote play. What am I doing wrong? Do I really need a TV or am I giving up on this whole idea to play via iMac?

24" iMacs don't have video inputs.
On top of that, whatever USB-C (DP) to HDMI adapter you bought was probably unidirectional, designed only to work with the USB-C end plugged into a video source (a computer), and the HDMI end plugged into a monitor or TV. Wouldn't have worked even if the iMac was willing to accept video input (which it isn't).
There might be specialized HDMI video capture devices and applications that you could buy, if your objective was to record game sessions, and you had $$$$ to spend, and there wasn't HDCP DRM on the PS5's HDMI signal that interfered with a capture. But if you want a TV set to play your PS5 games on, buy a 1080p HDTV or a 4K UHDTV.

You don't, iMacs are computers they ARE NOT external displays for other devices. If your PS 5 needs an external display, please buy one.
