Amex not working for Apple pay

I’m having this exact issue and Amex is trying to make me feel crazy. Maybe to save fact?

Edit: call Amex support and speak with technical support. Don’t stop until you speak with someone in technical support and have the issue documented.

They just confirmed verbally over the phone that it is indeed an issue and I think more people need to complain on the phone.

American Express is having major Apple Pay issues currently. Merchants are upgrading their systems and American Express cards stop working. I had this issue yesterday at Publix and Winn Dixie (major grocery stores throughout southeast) and both just completed upgrades to POS systems and AmEx quit working with Apple Pay at both chains. Card works, just not American Express with Apple Pay.

Visa, Mastercard and Discover work fine with Apple Pay.

My suspicion is it’s an AmEx issue. At both merchants (I went to multiple locations) the transaction terminal brought up an entirely different screen. It was processing the information from Apple Pay incorrectly and bringing up a screen to pick credit, debit, cash back etc. When clerk tried processing, the error was invalid transaction.

I talked to the manager at several Publix’s and even tried some things at a register at Customer Service counter. He said all the AmEx cards are failing. He also noted that I was one of the few that wasn’t upset and was willing to try and troubleshoot it with him. We both noticed the unusual screen on the terminal.
