a quick work-around is to use an external keyboard and mouse.

Your appointment at the Genius Bar at an Apple-owned store for an evaluation is free, in warranty or out.

Apple-Authorized Service Providers are free to charge an 'evaluation fee', to keep you from consuming expensive technician time on frivolous (READ: non repair-revenue-generating) issues.

if the fix is simple and the problem does not require too much time, they might be able to fix it during your visit. The only charges are for when parts are consumed in making the repair.

Remember that the Genius Bar technician time may not exclusive to you. They may be working with other customers at the same time, waiting for time-consuming testing or waiting for a MacOS re-install to complete.
