It can certainly be annoying when trying to reference adjacent cells and the column widths are smaller than default. I prefer the formula bar up in the toolbar (i.e., in Numbers '09 and before) where it is never in the way. The silly thing is they have something like a formula bar at the bottom of the window but it is for display only. So, real-estate-wise, it takes up the same space as a real formula bar but is less useful. I wish we had a choice to use a formula bar on the toolbar vs on the cell.

While we're at it, I wish we could turn off the "smartness" of the formula editor because it almost invariably screws up my formulas when I try to edit them. It inserts commas and plus signs in that I don't want and will delete other things as I try to edit. Too often I have to "edit as text" just to get it to quit. Something between the normal editing features and "edit as text" would be nice (the colored cell references are nice and the bloated parentheses can be handy when debugging, though far from necessary).

And I detest the replacement of / with ÷ because ÷ looks like + in that teeny font we cannot change. And I don't care for it replacing * with ×. This is just more silliness or trying to be cute.

Occasionally the formula editor gets in the way for me too. But I find it reasonably easy to move.

I also find it sometimes gets too smart. But on the whole I think its functionality competes well with Excel.

Especially for those who haven't been crafting formulas ever since the days computers were the size of a room and keyboards were so limited some engineer was forced to coopt / to mean ➗.

The latter I suspect has had the meaning of division for a lot longer, with / being the confusing newcomer born of necessity. But I could be wrong.

It isn't that I mind the symbol ÷, per se. It is that the font is small in the formula editor and it is difficult to discern from + if your eyesight is less than perfect. Two symbols that look a lot alike, combined with them being in a small font that makes them look even more alike, makes it a poor design choice in my opinion. From my normal screen distance I tell them apart because ÷ looks less sharp/crisp to me than +. Otherwise they look the same. I have to lean forward to actually see the dots. The old division symbol / was pretty darned easy to tell apart from + at any distance.

So, I don't think they are trying to be cute!
