iPhone 12 gets hot while charging

I have had the IPhone 12 for about two years. Always keep a case and screen and lense protectors on, still have the same charging cable that came with the phone. Within the past few months I’ve noticed when charging the back part of my phone gets really hot and I have to take off my case for it to charge. Can someone please tell me what’s going on and what to do?
