Final Cut Pro Freezing After Latest Update on MacBook Pro M3 Pro

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing consistent freezing with Final Cut Pro after the latest update. When I right click the app in the dock it says that Final Cut Pro is unresponsive. I’m using a MacBook Pro M3 Pro 14-inch, and the app freezes right after I try to edit in cinematic mode or when I edit title text.

Here are some details:

  • No external plugins are installed.
  • I’m using the Apple SF font library for my titles.
  • This issue started only after the recent update; everything was fine before.
  • I’ve tried closing all other libraries and keeping only the current one open, but it didn’t help.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any solutions? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

There is a 10.8 bug when manipulating on-screen controls (OSC) for titles with a trackpad (whether on MacBook or external Magic Trackpad).

Matthew O'Brien reported this on his Youtube channel two days ago.

I reproduced it on my M1 Ultra Mac Studio, Sonoma 14.5, using a Magic Trackpad. I normally use a Magic Mouse but I attached a trackpad and the problem immediately happened -- even just using "Basic Titles."

I'll try Cinematic Mode to see if it's related, but the trackpad + title OSC scenario is known (as of two days ago).

The workaround Matthew mentioned was:

  • If you disable "Tap to click" in Settings < Trackpad you can interact with elements in the Viewer window without any issue.
  • If you disable "Use trackpad for dragging" in Settings < Accessibility < Pointer Control < Trackpad Options you can drag elements in the Viewer window.

Is this version 10.8?

Whenever the application crashes, the first thing is to delete its preferences.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings.

Reopen the library you were working on and see if things work.

If the problem persists: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here. Use the "additional text" button and paste the report into the text box.
