cannot type passwords on the terminal

Remember that you must be using an Admin User to use sudo command successfully.

The terse phrase often used is: "Type your password, which will not be echoed"

Entering a Passord in Terminal:

When you enter a password in Terminal, it is always blank.

So, try starting the command with the foir-letters: sudo

That is short for Super User Do.
