Why is HLS Media not available thru the AppleTV app?
So what is the deal with HLS media. If it is not supported directly from the Apple TV then why can I still export it from the server running my library to that Apple TV. That implies that it is a supported format, but the device is purposely blocked from seeing that in my library. Sorry, but as a former software engineer, I know a bug when I see one. It may have been intentional. At best that puts it in the class of backwards compatibility issue. Regardless, it's a bug. It needs to be addressed.
Finally, why is the HLS media only supported on the server to which it was downloaded. It cannot be moved anywhere outside of the download space. Furthermore, if I delete it but leave it on the filesystem, I can't reimport. I have to download it again. Sorry, but I don't have the bandwidth to stream this or download it to every server running AppleTV software. I went to external NFS servers in my network to keep my library from being on drives that cannot support the space as well as give me the the full range of view-ability that I can only get from an internally managed 1GB ethernet. I can't even delete it from that library because if I do it won't allow the downloaded file to be reimported. I don't have the bandwidth to download this onto multiple servers or stream it otherwise. Whether you want to admit it or not, this is a major backwards compatibility flaw in the AppleTV devices. I would recommend fixing it, because the not supported format line doesn't quite cut it when I can still export from the server to that same AppleTV you say doesn't support the format.
