I can't screen mirror from my MacBook Pro to my iMac, my iMac does not appear when I click the control center screen mirror button, yet, I can screen mirror the other way around (from my iMac to my MacBook Pro). It seems that if it works one way it should work the other way, so why is my iMac not appearing as an option to screen mirror on my MacBook?

That is odd.
How are you connecting? AirPlay to Mac? Network screen sharing? A third-party solution like Luna or Duet Display?
A 2017 iMac does not support Airplay to Mac.
If you are trying to use Target Display Mode, both devices are too new to use that dead technology.
It would help us if you can, at least, provide us with the exact models of both of your Macs, and what exact version of macOS each is running.
My MacBook is operating on Sonoma 14.5. It's a late 2023 model... My iMac is a 2017 model on Ventura 13.6.7 (because it doesn't allow me to update further- if you know how I can, I could try that by the way). I know this might be the issue, but why is it allowing me to screen mirror on my MacBook if I can't screen mirror on it?
