Air tag used to track vehicles

I put Air Tags in each of my vehicles to allow me to track them if the vehicle is stolen. But, I just learned, that if the thief has a compatible device, it will alert the thief as the AT emits a sound. I do not want that to happen. Is there a way to turn that off? I can see where that may be a privacy issue since someone could put it onto anyone else's car to track them. But, I still want to know, can that feature be turned off?

Apple does not provide any means to mute the sound that an AirTag can make. Even if you could, the thief would still be alerted to the fact that the tag is present.

AirTags are NOT designed for tracking. Nor are they anti-theft devices. If this your goal, you should consider using a dedicated tracker based on GPS, not Bluetooth. For example, those provided by LoJack.
