I am unable to connect headphones to my MacBook Pro

I can't get sound to headphones when plugging direct in to Mac book pro?

Any help out there??

Have you checked the basics ... like,

Do you have Mute enabled?
Is the volume control all the way down?
In sound settings, if there are multiple outputs listed, is "Headphones" selected as your output?
In Audio Midi Setup, does the "Built-in output" show a headphone icon, and is it selected?

Also, are you using regular headphones with a 3.5mm stereo plug, or are you using USB headphones?
