Will changing the Apple ID password erase all contents on my iPhone even if it’s logged out?

I don’t remember my password for my Apple ID. Yes I can change it but before I do that the stolen device will be logged out and I want to erase everything on that device. If I change the password, can I still erase all content on the device even if it’s logged out? And will it lock it for who ever stole it?

Changing your Password will not log your device out of your Apple ID. Even if you do not know your Password, the thief will not be able to reset your device as it will still be locked to your Apple ID. You will need to reset your Password before you can send the command to erase all contents.
