OWC Thunderbay 4 DAS T3 connection to iMac drops regularly causing restart

OWC Thunderbay 4 DAS connected directly to 2017 iMac (running Ventura) via Thunderbolt 3 with SoftRAID monitor software.

I've had it for 4 years or so, but it has always occasionally disconnected. I originally replaced the whole DAS, same issue. I've used different cables, including OWC cable.

Apple support insisted it wasn't the Mac, and must be a peripheral issue. SoftRAID support denied it was their software and blamed Apple. And of course OWC denied that it was the peripheral. And so I've just put up with the occasional dropout.

I'm using it more frequently these days, and drop outs are more regular (eg. ~2 hrs). Sometimes it forces a restart. If it happens during sleep, it sometimes locks it in sleep and I can't wake it.

Kernel Panic occasionally displayed, with error: "CATERR detected! No MCA data found."

Can anyone provide advice on:

  1. a way to stop the disconnects / restarts
  2. a workaround (e.g. I've read some people have success by connecting via a thunderbolt hub, but I haven't spent the $200+ just to try it.)

EtreCheck report:
