Microsoft Outlook will no longer work with Apple Mail

I have received an eMail from Microsoft informing me that as of September 16, 2024, I will no longer be able to access Outlook through Mail. I am required to update my Outlook access through Apple Mail, how do we do that? Or, is Apple going to update Mail because of this?

Sonoma is later, much much later than 10.14 Mojave.

Go into System Settings ➜ Internet Accounts, and make sure your Microsoft email account shows up as an Exchange account there. If it does then you are fine.

It does affect accounts added to iPhone and iPad yes.

On your iPhone go into Settings ➜ Mail ➜ Accounts, and make sure your account appears there as Outlook, and not as Hotmail or Live. If it does, then you are fine. If it doesn't, you may need to remove it from there, and add it again using the Outlook option.

This worked for me also. Don't select configure manually. I noticed my Outlook.com account created using 'Other mail account' in the accounts selection window defaults to IMAP which is why it is constantly prompting me for password verification. When I attempted adding the exchange account before, I chose configure manually and it prompted for simple authentication which was giving me the same issue with multiple password requests. Selecting configure automatically or 'Sign In' will prompt you with the Microsoft '360 like' authenticator. Enter your password and it should prompt you to save the new account functions. You will have to scroll down a bit and click accept on the microsoft notification and you will receive an email from microsoft about accessing functions in your mail app.

Apple Mail for Mac: The Microsoft support article "Modern Authentication Methods" instructs Apple Mail users to delete the Outlook account and reinstall it. I did that several months ago thinking all would be well. On Oct 1 new messages failed to load and the Outlook account could not be reinstalled (password not recognized). Using the Microsoft Exchange option under Internet Accounts allowed the account to be reinstalled. No mention of this was made in the Microsoft article.

Microsoft will continue to support Apple Mail, they just require a higher more secure level of authentication to use your Outlook.com, Hotmail.com or Live.com email accounts with it.

Apple Mail supports it fine, unless you have an older macOS version with an older version of Mail on it.

What macOS version is your Mac currently running?

To help keep Outlook personal email accounts secure, starting

September 16, 2024, Microsoft will no longer support Basic Auth, the

method in which a person provides only their username and password to

sign into their account.  As of September 16, 2024, Outlook will require

that all those with a Microsoft email account use a mail or calendar

app or the Outlook.com website which supports modern auth, such as the

latest versions of Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird.

Yeah I archived all my old inbox, including folders, and sent folder into “on my iMac” then deleted my old email acct and added it back using the Microsoft Exchange option. It works, although as anything with change for me, I have to remember not to delete anything I want to keep until I download them onto my MacBook. Once a week I move all those new inbox and sent emails into the archive folder, which removes them all from my phone then. Its added some extra work, but overall I’m getting used to it and it works ok.

Same here, it’s exhausting isn’t it. Long story short, I've been reliably informed that Mac OS users should choose the Microsoft Exchange option when setting up their Outlook account in Apple Mail. Have a read thread of this thread.

I just restored my MacBook Pro with MacOs Ventura 13.7 and did add my Outlook Account as "Exchange" Account.

It did look good as all the Mails loaded correctly and there seemed to be no issues but as I tried to send a new Mail, it failed to do so, as there was only the iCloud Mail as Outgoing Mail-Server configured. After several searches and retries it seemed to just not work anymore.

The solution in the end was to delete the Outlook mail account and added it again and during this process also deactivated the synchronization of the iCloud Mail since I don't need it.

Afterwards sending mails was possible again.

I'd been getting "verify your Exchange password" notifs on my 2018 Refurbished Macbook Air running the latest OS updates for a while, and mostly ignored them because the Mail app was working fine. I updated to Sonoma 14.7 recently, and started getting the notif MORE. When I finally was like "okay, let's do this then", the first couple of times it went fine.

Today, I finally started gettting "cannot authenticate" popups after entering my email address and account password, and I had no clue what I was doing wrong. I finally ended up going to the Outlook browser version, and while poking around in settings, I found the Forwarding and IMAP menu. Scrolled down, turned on "let devices and apps use POP" (no idea what that is, but since the IMAP setting was already turned on and my Mail client still wasn't working, I figured why not?), set it to "allow devices and apps to delete messages from Outlook", and then tried logging in with the Apple Mail app. Lo and behold, it works!

Please G-d no more of those **** "reenter your password" notifs 🙏

Deleting the current outlook account and replacing it using MS Exchange worked except it was putting all my incoming mail into the junk folder. Even after marking the items as "not junk", it kept returning them to junk. I gave up and now access my mail via web (outlook.live.com). Maybe some day Apple will revamp its app
