How do I free up space on my MacBook Pro?

Is it normal for my applications to take up 189.09 GB (out of 245.11 GB) if I only have the apps that come with the MacBook when you originally purchase it? Why are they taking up so much space, and how can I free up space? Also the rest of my storage is taken up by iCloud Drive, so I only have like 5GB left! HELPPPP!

How do I remove apps to save space on my MacBook Air? I have not used my Mac air for a year and apparently it has reached its limit for hard drive space. Can remove apps and, etc from the Mac air and not lose the info from my iPad? [Re-Titled by Moderator]

Confusion with Mac storage (applications section) So it all started when I accidentally moved most of my saved videos and photos from my desktop folder onto my icloud drive. I have since undo that, but that's not what this question is about. After fixing that up, I was looking through the storage part in my system settings when I noticed how my applications section was taking up a ton of space (see picture below). At first I was confused by this, so I counted the amount of storage for each app (at least the ones using 20MB or more) and the total space ended up being less than 19GB. Why does my laptop believe that my applications are taking up more than 100GB? Would shutting down my laptop solve my issue?

Thanks, but I've already tried all of that and the applications still take up most of my storage...
