Why does the Messages app close after 10 seconds on my iPhone 12?

iOS 17.5.1

click on Messages app and I get a blank screen for about 10 seconds and then it closes.

not able to send or receive messages.

occasionally works again for a couple of mins.

tried restart and reset.

any help appreciated.
