MapMyRide stops syncing between watch and iphone mid ride

My Apple watch stops updating information on Map My Ride during a ride. The watch is still sending heartrate information to my phone during the entire ride, but the screen is stuck. It does not happen at a consistent point. One day it may stick at 4 miles and the next day it may stick at 17 miles. This used to happen several years ago, but the watch would update after a few more miles. This just started a week ago so I'm thinking that an update on the phone or the watch has done something. I just restarted my phone and watch so I'll see if that does anything to fix the problem.
