RAW pictures are extremely blurry

Hello.

I am using Sony Alpha A6400 camera and I shoot RAW. I am currently using iPhone 14. I am using

icloud, and "Download and Keep Originals" is not selected.

I transfer my RAW pictures via lightning SD card reader.

My problem is blurry photos.

  • When I open photos in photos app, even at the slightest zoom, pictures are extremely blurry.
  • When I tap on "edit" tap in photos app and zoom in, pictures are not blurry and I can see original quality.
  • When I exit from "edit" mode, pictures are still blurry when zoomed.
  • I tried rotating the pictures in "edit" mode but nothing changes.
  • When I airdrop pictures to my Mac, pictures are not blurry, so no problem here.
  • When I save pictures to files and tried to open them with the files app (not photos app) pictures are stilly blurry. (I tried this to check if my problem is due to icloud copies are inferior in quality)
  • When I access my pictures via icloud web site, pictures are not blurry, so no problem here either.
  • When I use third party applications (like Lightroom) pictures are not blurry.

I am wondering what is the source of this problem.

Thank you in advance.

In Photos, the thumbnails (little pictures when you look at a bunch together) and the previews (pictures that fit on the screen) are separate from the originals. You have elected to not download the originals to your phone, which saves a ton of storage space on the phone. When you zoom in or edit or print, the iPhone retrieves the original full resolution copy from iCloud so you can manipulate it. If space is limited on the phone, then Photos eliminates the full sized image when it's not needed any more.

So, that's what you're seeing, I think. Apparently the thumbnails and previews were made before a full sized copy was rendered, and you're stuck with that. We've seen this before with some RAW files-- I wonder if the lower resolution image (the "preview") version, was included in the RAW file, maybe for quick viewing in Sony's own software, and Photos uses that. (Just guessing...) I wonder if you loaded the RAW files onto the Mac first, if the iPhone previews would be pretty and the Mac's would be blurry. Hmm.

The solution is pretty clear-- have Photos re-generate the Thumbnails and Previews.

Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to do that, and I can't test it myself. (There are lots of people here who have lots of experience, so there's probably an answer out there.) How about: what happens if you duplicate one of the blurry images?
