Spotlight search not working

My spotlight search is not working its not pulling up any applications, ive linked a couple screen shots below detailing the issue and i've tried re indexing the spotlight but then again that is only for documents as far as I am aware. I have no idea why this is happening and frankly the whole issue is a tad bit frustrating. I bought an expensive mac for the ease of use and having a experience much like windows spotlight is wild. Any ideas why this is happening?
