Imported Photos gone missing from Mac!!! PLS HELP

I imported thousands of photos from my iPhone 13 onto my MacBook Air in May 2024. I was recently going through my album on the Mac and was surprised to find that MANY photos are missing - all the way from the end of June 2023 to December 2023. I don't understand what happened!!

After Importing photos to the Mac and moving them to an album, I ALWAYS double cross-check the imported photos with the ones on my phone to make sure I have them before I delete anything from my phone to free up space. I do this with every single photo. It is a slow but reassuring process that helps me ensure I have in fact imported the pictures. On top of that. Just a while after I had imported said photos, I used my Mac to send some pictures to a friend that I knew I didn't have on my phone. SO I KNOW for a fact that these photos were on my Mac. What's more is that I imported these pictures along with several others. I have thousands of photos imported at the same time from before these months and after it. I don't understand what happened!!

SOMEONE please tell me what I can do. I have checked every thing and they are not anywhere. I don't upload my photos to the cloud. They are not in the recycle bin either nor do I have an iPhone backup as this is how I back up all my photos.

What about Matti's question about "more than one Photos Library"?

Do you have any external drives connected to your Mac, that you may have had connected when you imported the photos? If yes, check any external drives for a copy of your Photos Library, as well as your Pictures folder. From your initial question it looks like you have seen the missing photos last directly after importing them to Photos. Photos my a have imported them to a different Photos Library than you are using now. This can happen, if you have a an external drive connected with a copy of your library. Or, if you are keeping your library on an external drive and this drive gets dismounted, then Photos might switch to a different library. So you may want to check all your external drives for Photos Libraries and look there for the missing photos.

Which Mac backup? If you mean the Time Machine, I haven't been able to set that up.

Bummer. All disks eventually fail so backups are essential if they contain valuable data.

Have you checked Photos library's Recents and Imports if they contain the missing image import sessions? Sometimes images might have wrong dates and are put in unexpected places among old images.
