Reccomend a Displayport to HDMI that works with mac mini?

I just got a brand new Mac Mini. Latest gen with all the fixins. I have it connected to 2 monitors and some USB devices via a KVM that is also connected to 2 other computers (both Windows 11). Setup looks like this

This works great with the two PCs, but the mac is only seeing monitor 1. After a bunch of troubleshooting with apple, I ended up trying just connecting an HDMI cable straight from the mac mini to monitor 2. This worked, but that bypasses the KVM which doesn't really work for me. The only thing unusual about Monitor 2 is that adapter in the middle, so I tried connecting the HDMI cable from the mac mini to the displayport/hdmi adapter, and connecting that to monitor 1. I got no display output which pretty much confirms this adapter is the issue. It seems like if this adapter exists anywhere in the chain it just won't work. Does anyone know of a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to replace the one currently between the KVM and monitor 2 that for sure works with Mac Mini? Thanks.

I wonder if the DisplayPort to HDMI adapter connected to Monitor 2 is a passive adapter. With a passive adapter, the computer, rather than the "adapter", is doing the adapting.

If the one you have is passive, maybe the issue is that the Mac mini needs an active one.

Also, which Mac mini you have? If that is a M2 or M2 Pro Mac mini, it should be able to support two displays connected via USB-C or Thunderbolt. A M1 Mac mini can't do that – to get to two displays on that Mac, you must connect one via USB-C or Thunderbolt, and the other via HDMI.

Depends on how you read it - the section for two displays says Thunderbolt not USB-C, so my read is no can do.

Where Apple says "with up to 5K/6K resolution at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt", that's shorthand for

  • With up to 5K/6K resolution at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt, or
  • With up to 4K resolution at 60 Hz over USB-C (DisplayPort Alt Mode)

USB-C (DisplayPort) doesn't have as much bandwidth as USB-C (Thunderbolt), so the limit on panel resolution is lower, and the Mac will only let you drive one monitor over a single USB-C (DisplayPort) connection. (Macs don't support DisplayPort MST daisy-chaining.)

If you have the Mac mini M2 pro chip model with 4 TB 4/USB-C ports...

Go back to the original setup in your diagram and test two short 1m USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cables.

for example: > https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09M3BFHPP/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?

Then test using those USB-C to DisplayPort cables staggered on the TB 4/USB-C ports.

(one Display on Bus 0 and one Display on Bus 1)

Only if it’s the M2 Pro, otherwise one of the monitors must be HDMI-connected.

A M2 Mac mini with a plain M2 chip can drive two monitors over USB-C or Thunderbolt if you leave its HDMI port unconnected.

From the Technical Specifications:

----------

Display Support

Simultaneously supports up to two displays:

  • One display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K resolution at 60Hz over HDMI

----------

That 5K resolution limit on a second USB-C or Thunderbolt Display may translate to fewer available Retina scaling modes for a 4K monitor (i.e., nothing between "UI looks like 2560x1440" and non-Retina 3840x2160).

Hmm... yea' I missed the DP to HDMI adapter out to the one display.

To be honest I'm not positive, but there could be a problem with Mac mini not recognizing or missing that DP to HDMI conversion when the KVM is switched over. Maybe try switching from a PC back to the Mac mini, then unplug and replug the unrecognized display on the output side of the KVM switch to see if that gets the Mac mini to recognize that display.

Thank you for the followup reply.

If it is not working as it should, then...

A. Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally, attempting another update install. For instructions, go here: How to Use safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support

B. Try a New Admin User:

What happens when you create a new administrator user, and log into it? Do you still get this error? If not, then it is likely an error with the current user. If so, then it is likely an error with your Mac.

C. Use a 4K HDMI Cable:

If you are using a screen, then some have extreme resolution. So, a 4K HDMI cable seems the way to go.

Finding These Devices:

The port may be of issue here. So, three things to try...

A. Verify the Connection:

First off, see if the headphones are is even seen:

  1. Hold Down: the Option key
  2. Click: the Apple menu
  3. Choose: System Information or System Report
  4. Select: Graphic/Displays and USB from the list on the left
  5. Look For: these monitors

B. Reset the SMC and your NVRAM:

Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for Ports) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM.  It may take up to three resets to succeed (Applies to Intel-Based Macs Only)

Still no success?...

C. Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be, respectively. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple SupportImportant: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall.

Thank you for the image.

Look Up the Mac's Specs:

Macs only support 1 or 2 external display ports, deepening on the model. So, look up the model number, and find out how many external displays you can connect. So, there's no official way around this.

Getting a Display to Work:

You need to Equal out the hertz. To do that, you'd need an adapter. So, see if my User Tip is of any assistance: Configuring a USB-C Only Mac with a 30-Inch Apple Cinema Display - Apple Community

Thanks. Safe mode didn't seem to do anything. New admin user also did not seem to do anything. Connecting a cable straight from the mac to the monitor works but I need to go through the KVM. The KVM only supports displayport and the monitor only supports HDMI, so I need to have a displayport to HDMI adapter in the chain. Connecting the displayport to HDMI adapter to the working monitor and connecting the same 4K HDMI cable to that and then to the mac mini does not work which suggests the problem is going from displayport to HDMI and vise versa, not a hardware defect in my unit
