AppleTV keeps pop up pair remote

AppleTV 4k with wired ethernet. Verified running current OS. Using Siri Remote the unit shipped with (over 1.5 years ago). Remote fully charged. Remote fully functional. This is the ONLY Siri Remote in the building.

Starting yesterday, I started getting a popup “Pair your Remote”. This is odd, as the remote I have came with the unit (over a year ago) and is (and has been) fully functional. I plugged in the remote to charge it and set it on top of the AppleTV before going to bed.

The next day, the remote is still fully functional, however, I still, CONSTANTLY, get this pop up!! I have to use the back button to dismiss the pop up to do anything on the AppleTV. The pop up comes back 10-15 seconds later. The AppleTV has become unusable with this pop up…

I already tried Apple support, but since the AppleCare is expired on the device (yes I paid for extended care when purchased this device) they were unable to help :(

After about a month, the remote stopped working completely. Won’t charge or anything. Replace the remote with another USB-C Siri Remote, removed the old remote and paired the new remote and everything has been good since. At some point I may take apart the old remote and see if the battery became defective, but I am only assuming at this point.
