AirPods Max connecting while not in use

I have a new pair of AirPods Max and I've noticed that they connect to bluetooth when they are not being utilize. This has happened a few times and even when I turn bluetooth off and then back on again, while the headphones are sitting on the counter, they automatically reconnect to bluetooth as soon as I turn it back on despite still being on the counter and not having been in use for several hours.

I tried to add more pictures to show the headphones on the counter, me turning off bluetooth, turning it back on and the headphones reconnecting automatically, and the headphones still on the counter but more than one image from my iPhone 15 exceeds the maximum file capacity here.

After posting this I realized I have Apple Care on these as they're new and spoke to a rep there who answered this question.

For anyone else wondering the same thing, for both the AirPods Max and the AirPods Pro this is a normal function when they are not in the case. If you leave either of the AirPods pros or the AirPods Max out of the case they will (attempt to) connect to your device automatically via bluetooth.

I'm also experiencing my regular AirPods Pro staying connected when not in my ear. I have a new iPhone 15 Pro Max so I don't think it is a phone issue. I have cleaned the case, connectors, and headphones multiple times. This doesn't happen on my MacBook Pro as I have it set to only connect to both types of headphones if they were last connected to the MacBook. My apologies if this is two separate issues, however, given I've done all of the generally recommended fixes and it is happening with both types of AirPods I'm wondering if these two issues are connected which is why I'm posting both here.
