I'm getting a new MacBook Air, probably, soon. I want to save some files (not all) which are on my old MacBook Pro now, for easy access once I'm up and running on a new MacBook Air. I don't necessarily want to immediately put everything on a new Mac. ( Old Mac can only run Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6. if that's relevant.)
Will this be easy and painless? And hints or suggestions please?

Best Way to Transfer Data:
Get an External Hard Drive that is of twin the side of your internal one. Than, create a Time Machine Backup of your old Mac to this hard drive. Once you have your new Mac, transfer items over, using Migration Assistant. In doing so, you won't eat up any of your internal space of your old Mac. Note: Applications are device-only. So, you may need to contact the Developer, asking them if you can have a new license key to transfer it all to a new device.

If Selling a Mac:
If you were to sell it, then be honest about this, stating any issue that it is/was having issues. So, perform as instructed here, including the iCloud logout: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade In your Mac - Apple Support.

Based on personal experience….
Consider Recycling this:
I have a 2018 MacBook Pro, and I plan keep it bit, so that I can run Intel-Based software and older Windows Virtual Machines. I got rid of my 2010 MacBook Pro in 2017. Because it was so bulky an heavy. Rather than selling it, I recycled it at a local retailer. So, consider recycling it, if you ever have want to rid of it.
Consider AppleCare:
My 2017 MacBook Pro wend dead 11 times due to connection issues between the screen and the LogicBoard. Because I had AppleCare, Apple gave me a free $2,500 upgrade for no more than the price of the AppleCare coverage I purchase with it. I had to send it in 11 times via mail for it to be worked on.
