Is this for real or just an attempt to buy anti-virus software?

It's a scam, either to mislead you into buying software you don't need and/or to frame a competitor's product.
A message warning of malware will only be legitimate if you manually started a scanner(not possible in a Mac web browser) or uploaded a file to a website.

If you fell for a tech support scam, you’d be lucky if the only thing the scammers did was to sell you useless software. If you gave any financial information to criminals, it would be tempting for them to clean you out more thoroughly or to sell your name and information to other criminals looking for an easy mark.
